- citizens have the right to: happiness and prosperity, representation, education, the courts (that courts shall be open to all persons and justice will be administered without favor, denial, or delay), benefits of higher education (the General Assembly shall provide the benefits of the University of NC and other public institutions of higher education to the people of the state, as far as practicable)
- Government Abuses
- it is the right of the citizens to abolish a government that repeatedly abuses its citizenry.

Relation to the Judicial Branch |

Government Abuses |
- To create a system of checks and balances of power, each of the three branches have a role in the actions of the others. The Judicial Branch, therefore, helps check and balance the powers of the executive and legislative branches.

Equality |
- All citizens are equal in the eyes of the law
- The court ensures the laws are applied equally and with just procedures
- The unified court system in North Carolina ensures that the courts operate accordingly and that the laws are applied equally across the state.

Individual Rights |
- Court interprets the law and seeks to protect these inalienable rights (i.e. the right of representation in a court of law)
- The accused are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law
- Under American government, citizens have both rights and responsibilities.
- Individual rights include freedom of choice, religion and speech; equal claims to opportunities, rights, and personal fulfillment. The court protects these individual rights.
- Individual responsibilities include voting in elections and referendums and serving as a juror.
