Judge Robert Edmunds joins Supreme Court of North Carolina

RALEIGH – Judge Robert H. Edmunds, Jr.  became an associate justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina following a 2 p.m. ceremony Jan. 4 in the Supreme Court courtroom. Chief Justice I. Beverly Lake, Jr. administered the oath of office.

As a Supreme Court justice, Edmunds will sit with six other justices to hear petitions, death cases and issues of importance concerning N.C. law.Edmunds has been an associate judge of the N.C. Court of Appeals since 1999. Prior to that time, Edmunds was a partner in the law firm Stern & Klepfer, L.L.P. from 1993 through 1998, and the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina from 1986 to 1993. As the U.S.Attorney, Edmunds handled criminal and civil cases, oversaw investigations, and prepared and argued appeals for the United States.

From 1978 to 1982, Edmunds was an assistant district attorney in Guilford County.

Born in Danville, Va., Edmunds has lived in Greensboro since he was nine years old. He graduated cum laude from Woodberry Forest School in Virginia in 1967 and he was on the dean’s list while attending Williams College in Willamstown, Mass. At Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, graduating with honors in 1971. His law degree is from the University of North Carolina School of Law where he graduated in 1975.

Edmunds was an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1975 to 1977. Since 1992, Edmunds has written several articles on federal sentencing guidelines for professional magazines.

Edmunds and his wife, Linda, have two sons, 18 year-old John and 16 year-old Edward.
